Job Description
We are seeking a Product Development Engineer to join our R&D team. The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline, and a minimum of 8 years experience with the design and testing of small-scale mechanical or chemical prototype devices. A demonstrated ability to develop pre-commercial hardware into a marketable product is required.
The engineer will assume a key role in the development of Aspen Products Group’s catalytic heating products. The responsibilities for this position include product design, materials and component selection, prototype system fabrication, and system testing. The successful candidate must have a strong background in thermodynamics, design of experiments, and design for manufacturing and assembly in both a development and manufacturing environment. The engineer must have good planning and organizational capabilities, have excellent hands-on problem solving skills, be able to handle several tasks simultaneously, and be comfortable working in a small company environment.
Job Responsibilities
• Generate innovative solutions to systems development challenges
• Collaborate with engineers to improve design of pre-commercial hardware
• Specify and procure system components, such as sensors, blowers, pumps, etc…, interacting with inside and outside resources
• Fabricate, test, and debug prototype systems
• Prepare test plans and acceptance criteria to study and verify system capabilities
• Collect and analyze data
• Identify areas for design improvement
• Write reports communicating technical developments to program manager
• Occasional domestic travel required (<5%)
Educational Qualifications
• Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline
Previous Work Experience
• A minimum of 8 years experience in mechanical or chemical systems design, fabrication, and testing
• Experience with advanced prototyping and early market production
• Experience with DFMA practices
Required Skills and Abilities
• Excellent analytical and hands-on problem solving skills
• Experience with prototype fabrication methods such as welding, soldering, sheet metal construction, and conventional machining
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with vendors, machine shops and partners
• Ability to handle multiple and changing priorities in a fast-paced R&D environment
• Good documentation, writing and reporting ability
Desirable Skills and Abilities
• Experience with mechanical design of liquid-fueled burners and heat exchangers
• Experience with bench-scale catalytic reactor testing
• Strong grounding in heat transfer and fluid dynamics
• Computer analysis/FEA experience
• Familiarity with embedded system controls
• Familiarity with Solidworks or other CAD programs
